The Queen City Contras contra dance happens in Burlington or Shelburne Vermont on the second Friday of every month from 8 to 11 PM. Go here for the schedule.

A new dancer orientation runs from 7:45 to 8:00 just before the regular dance starts. We are a friendly bunch and are happy to introduce you to the fun that is a contra dance.

Admission is $8. Children 12 and under dance for free.

What's a Contra Dance?

In a contra dance, guided by a caller, a couple dances a series of figures with other couples. There is always live music.  It's great fun. Watch a video of a dance.

I don't know how to dance.

The best way to learn is to try it. Beginners are always welcome. Join a new dancer orientation at 7;45 to learn how to get started.

I don't have a partner.
You don't need one. In fact, it is traditional to switch partners after each dance.

I don't have the proper shoes and clothes.
You don’t need anything that isn’t already in your closet. Contra dancing is good exercise so don’t overdress. Bring a water bottle and separate shoes from your street shoes to help to keep the dance floor clean.
